“CHEEKS” at Fort Funston
Location: Fort Funston, CA
My new carry-around camera arrived yesterday. It's a Panasonic Lumix LX3. I've only briefly played with it last night and at a trip to Fort Funston beach today, but so far I'm pretty impressed.

Wow, it's been about 6 weeks since I posted anything here. I knew it had been a while, but I didn't realize it had been that long.
I still don't really have anything new to show, except I did shoot this one while walking with Maggie at Fort Funston today.
I desperately need to make the time to get out an shoot.

Capturing the Light
Location: Fort Funston, CA
It was overcast and slightly gloomy for most of this visit to Fort Funston, but for just a little bit the clouds parted and revealed some really vivid light. It made everything kind of glow.
I wanted to capture the essence of this light, without photographing the beach or the waves specifically. I decided the best way to do this would be to purposely shoot the scene out of focus.
You may be asking why I didn't just take the picture (in focus), and then blur it in Photoshop later. While I have nothing against post-processing (I do it on most of my images), I do think there are times when you need to commit to your vision of the image... in camera. It's a little too easy these days to be sloppy when you're shooting, and then create the image later at a computer. There's nothing wrong with doing that, but making more (irreversible) decisions at the time you shoot will make you a better photographer. It forces you to really look at (and think about) what you're shooting.

Maggie's ears are flapping up and down as she runs towards me. We try to get to the beach twice a week. She loves it, and so do I. :)

Maggie Loves Fort Funston (and so do I)
Location: Fort Funston, CA
I've mentioned this several times before, but we take our dog, Maggie Moo, to the beach at Fort Funston every weekend. She loves to run in the surf and roll in the sand.
I work freelance, so my schedule can be fairly flexible. It affords me the luxury of taking time off in the middle of the week to get her out to Fort Funston a second time. Which is good, because if I didn't, she would be climbing the walls by the next weekend. We went out there today and had a great time. Maggie did her thing, and I found a few things to shoot. I'll be posting a few more images from todays walk.
The fact that Maggie needs to burn off some energy mid-week is actually a good thing. It forces me to take a break from work. It's interesting, I take her there to get rid of some of her energy, while it seems to help me recharge a little. I think I enjoy it as much as she does.
On a side-note, you may have noticed that I've posted a few images that are a 4:3 aspect ratio (instead of my typical 3:2). That's because I picked myself up a brand new walking-around camera the other day. I bought a Canon G9. I love my Canon 40D, but I don't really want to carry it every where I go. It's a little big for that. I wanted something I could just keep with me at all times. So far I'm pretty happy with the G9. I'll be writing a full review once I play with it a bit more.

Freedom at Fort Funston
Location: Fort Funston, CA
I've been swamped with work lately, so much so that I haven't been able to even think about photography. But, I did manage to get out for a little bit today. I took our dog, Maggie Moo, out to Fort Funston.
While we were on the upper portion (the cliffs), this hang glider dropped down to my level and flew by. His flight looked very peaceful.
This one is better viewed big, so click the image.

Jellyfish at Fort Funston
Location: Fort Funston, CA
I took our dog, Maggie Moo, out to Fort Funston today. Our visit was cut a bit short because the beach was covered with (dead) jellyfish. They were up and down the entire beach. In 4 years of going out there, I don't remember ever seeing this before. It's not uncommon to see one or two, but there must have been thousands out there today.
We ended up leaving because Maggie kept trying to eat them. Even if she hadn't, I was a little worried about letting her go in the water. I don't know if all jellyfish sting, but I do know that some are extremely poisonous. I thought better safe than sorry.
Unfortunately, the only camera I had with me was my iPhone. As lame as that camera is, I thought these came out kind of nice. I may go back tomorrow with a better camera, if I get a chance. I have some other photographing to do in the city tomorrow.
