It was overcast and slightly gloomy for most of this visit to Fort Funston, but for just a little bit the clouds parted and revealed some really vivid light. It made everything kind of glow.
I wanted to capture the essence of this light, without photographing the beach or the waves specifically. I decided the best way to do this would be to purposely shoot the scene out of focus.
You may be asking why I didn't just take the picture (in focus), and then blur it in Photoshop later. While I have nothing against post-processing (I do it on most of my images), I do think there are times when you need to commit to your vision of the image... in camera. It's a little too easy these days to be sloppy when you're shooting, and then create the image later at a computer. There's nothing wrong with doing that, but making more (irreversible) decisions at the time you shoot will make you a better photographer. It forces you to really look at (and think about) what you're shooting.

Maggie's ears are flapping up and down as she runs towards me. We try to get to the beach twice a week. She loves it, and so do I. :)

For Thanksgiving we went to Milwaukee to visit Anne Marie's family. While we were there her cousins took us out one night to Lucille's Rockin' Pianos. It was actually pretty cool. A pair of piano players take requests and kind of play off of each other. It was a younger crowd, so the music tended to be relatively modern.

I have to admit, I have a slight obsession with found objects. When I'm walking around, I generally scan the street looking for interesting little items, and wondering what the story is behind them. It's a special treat whenever I find photographs of people. I get to not only wonder about the object and the person who dropped it, but the person in the photograph as well. This photo immediately caught my attention. I found it while walking our dog.
As a side-story, there was a guy walking by me when I was shooting this in the street. He stopped and looked at the picture, and then turned to me and said, "awesome!" He started to walk away and then turned and asked if I would be taking the picture with me. He was bummed when I told him I was.

The other sign reads, "Our Family: 2 moms, 3 sons, 2 daughters-in-law, 1 girlfriend, and 1 kitty".
This was taken at the protest against the passing of Prop 8, at the San Francisco Civic Center. This one is better viewed large (click the image).
