Highly Subjective Widget

Today I fired up my beta copy of Apple's Dashcode and made myself a Widget. So, if you're running Mac OSX 10.4.3 or above, you can have my most recent images delivered straight to your dashboard. Keep in mind, only my photographs come in, so you'll need to come back to the site for the rest of the content.

This version only updates once per day. I'm not sure how to make it update more often, but I hope to include that feature in a future release.

My First Rejection Letter

A couple of weeks ago I submitted work for a gallery show here in San Francisco. It was my first time doing something like this. Yesterday, this arrived in my inbox...

Dear Paul,

Thank you so much for submitting your work to the Our World juried exhibition competition. Seventy five artists submitted work for this exhibition and last week our panel of experts (Linda Conner, Thom Sempere and Anne Birle Veh) made their final decision. Unfortunately your work was not selected for this exhibition. We want to sincerely thank you for your interest and let you know how much we appreciate the time and energy you spent creating your submission materials.

We hope that you will come by and see the exhibition during the course of its run, July 12 – September 21, or join us for the reception on Tuesday, July 31 at City Hall on the ground floor.

Sincerely,

Meg Shiffler, SFAC Gallery Director
Thom Sempere, PhotoAlliance Executive Director

Oh well. Better luck next time. You can't win if you don't play, right?

Shameless Self Promotion

I've been trying to generate a little more traffic for my site lately, so I've listed it on a few more Photoblog sites. If you like my photographs, maybe you could take a minute to stop by some of those sites and give me a favorable rating. ~Thanks.

Sites that do NOT require registration to vote:
Cool Photoblogs

Sites that require registration to vote (free and quick):
VFXY Photos
Photoblog Awards
Photoblog Community

Thanks for your help in spreading the word.

On a side-note, if you're into photography, and you've never checked out VFXY Photos (mentioned above), you should. It's an awesome site! Basically, the site gets fed images from thousands of photoblogs, so it's a great way to see a lot of really nice photography. It's actually my new home page.

Carnaval SF ‘07 Gallery Posted

I finally processed all my photos from Carnaval San Francisco 2007. You can access the gallery through the Galleries link in the side-bar.

I’ve started a galleries page

Until now I've been posting images from my recent Bay to Breakers shoot one-by-one here on the blog. Even after editing out most of what I shot, there is still too much to keep posting this way. So, I've started a galleries page for images that were shot at a single location of event. So far the Bay to Breakers shoot is the only one in there, but I'll be adding more galleries from other events as I shoot them.

You can access the galleries page from the sidebar.

I’ve switched from Pixelpost to Wordpress

Tonight I switched the software that powers this site from Pixelpost to Wordpress. Over the next week or two (I hope), I'll be tediously re-posting each image from the old site. Until I get everything moved over, you can see all my previous images on my old Pixelpost site. I'll be working backwards from newest to oldest, and I'll be using the date the images were originally posted, so the old images will appear before this post. I may also delete each image from the old site as I re-post it here.

I started this site almost a year ago. At the time I was only looking for an easy way to post what I was shooting, and Pixelpost seemed like a good solution because it is specifically designed for Photoblogs, and it was relatively easy to get up and running quickly. As time went on, I began to feel frustrated with some of Pixelpost's technical limitations, and also began to re-define what I wanted this site to be.

Many Photoblogs put the emphasis on photo, in that they show one large image per page. I followed that format when I started mine too, but I later began to think that this was giving the site a semi-formal look to it, as if I were presenting work from a portfolio. This site was never really intended to be a portfolio... in fact, I often post images that aren't necessarily my best, they're just what I'm currently shooting. Given my intent for this site, I wanted to shift the emphasis back towards the blog side of photoblog, since that's really what it is. To that end, I'll be posting more images per page, and occasionally posting other photography related content as well.

The new wordpress site is still a little rough, but I'll be tweaking it over the next couple weeks.
