Wordcamp 2007

Location: San Francisco, CA - Wordcamp 07

Over the weekend I attended Wordcamp 2007. It's a conference all about Wordpress, the blogging platform I use to run this site.

This photo is taken on the balcony level, of the Swedish American Hall, where the conference took place.

Weekly Photo Assignment #1 - ‘Yellow’

Weekly Photography Assignment #1 - Yellow

Just over a week ago I was listening to an episode of The Focus Ring photography podcast, and one of the photographers was talking about how he gives himself weekly photo assignments. He said it helped keep him motivated to shoot, and it also usually worked out better to have a planned theme, rather than just going out and shooting random stuff. I thought this sounded like a great idea, and instead of doing it all by myself, I decided to get a few friends involved. Tonight was the deadline for our first assignment. The theme was "Yellow". Click the photographer's name below to view the images.

Photographers:
Anne Marie, Paul, Scott & Aubrey, StephanieTodd

The way we're picking assignment themes is we all came up with five topics, and then we'll pick one at random each week. I'll be posting each week's images on Sunday nights.

Comments, critiques, and constructive criticism is welcome. Although this isn't meant to be a competition, feel free to mention which ones you like best. My personal vote would be for Stephanie's. I think it's awesome!

Bell Pepper #2

This is from my pepper shoot the other day. It's the same pepper as the previous image I posted, but I didn't achieve the look I was going for with this shot. But, I still like it.

Tips for using your flash

Here's a nice little video tutorial with a couple of great tips for using your flash more effectively. It also includes a good explanation on the relationship between your flash, and the shutter inside your camera.

I don't know much at all about flash photography, so I learned a few things from this.

The video is produced by snapfactory.com, and studiolighting.net.

Thirty-Something

Thirty-Something

Location: San Francisco, CA - My Bedroom

For those of you who have been into Photography for a while, you're probably familiar with Edward Weston. If you're not, Weston was a photographer from early to mid 20th century. He hung out with the likes of Ansel Adams, and was co-founder of Group f/64.

One of Weston's most well known images is Pepper No. 30. Obviously Weston's pepper was unique, but through a firm grasp of lighting, he was able to give his image a very sensual, almost human-figure appearance.

I've always wanted to try my hand at shooting a pepper. Not so much to try and copy Pepper No. 30, because that would obviously be pretty difficult, but rather to achieve a similar sensual appearance. So, I picked myself up a pepper over at Whole Foods and gave it a shot.

Although this is my first attempt, and I would like to find a more unusual pepper, I'm pretty happy with my results. I have a few more that I may post once I go through them.
